Source codes
The 2006 LIS format documented LOCAL and SUBDUC. The current CRSMD catalog uses shortened/updated codes such as SUBDU and also distinguishes INSLAB. Modern LIS research separates crustal, subduction interface and subduction intraslab tectonic regimes.
LOCAL
|
Local / crustal
Local or shallow crustal earthquake classification. |
|---|---|
SUBDU
|
Subduction
Subduction-source code used in the current CRSMD catalog. It is kept as the database code; modern analyses further distinguish interface and intraslab events. |
INSLAB
|
Subduction intraslab
Earthquake occurring within the subducting plate; also described as deep or intraplate subduction. |
UNDEF
|
Undefined
No tectonic-source classification is defined in the record. |
SUBDUC
|
Historical subduction code
Subduction code documented in the original 2006 LIS data-format publication. |
Installation-condition codes
These codes describe the instrument location/refuge, not the geological soil class.
FFD
|
Free field
Instrument installed in a free-field condition. |
|---|---|
BDU
|
Building up
Instrument located in the upper part of a building. |
BDG
|
Building down
Instrument located in the lower part of a building. |
Historical soil codes
The legacy LIS format documented the following soil classes. Current station pages may use more detailed or revised site information.
S1
|
Rock
Rock site. |
|---|---|
S2
|
Hard
Hard soil/site class. |
S3
|
Soft
Soft soil/site class. |
S4
|
Very soft
Very soft soil/site class. |
Distance measures
Epicentral distance
km
|
Repi
Horizontal distance between the earthquake epicentre and the recording station. |
|---|---|
Hypocentral distance
km
|
Rhyp
Three-dimensional distance between the earthquake hypocentre and the recording station. |
Joyner-Boore distance
km
|
Rjb
Shortest horizontal distance from the station to the surface projection of the rupture. |
Rupture distance
km
|
Rrup
Shortest three-dimensional distance from the station to the rupture surface. |
Record components
N00E
|
North-South / longitudinal component
Horizontal component identified in the LIS format as N00E. |
|---|---|
N90E
|
East-West / transverse component
Horizontal component identified in the LIS format as N90E. |
Z / UPDO
|
Vertical component
Vertical motion component. Historical LIS files used UPDO; current tables use Z. |
Intensity measures (IM)
CRSMD stores IM values by component when applicable. PGA is expressed in cm/s² and PGV in cm/s in the current interface.
PGA

Peak Ground Acceleration
Maximum absolute ground acceleration in the processed record. |
|---|---|
PGV
|
Peak Ground Velocity
Maximum absolute ground velocity. |
PGV/PGA
|

Ratio between peak ground velocity and peak ground acceleration. |
ACCrms
|
RMS acceleration
Root-mean-square acceleration over the analyzed motion. |
VELrms
|
RMS velocity
Root-mean-square velocity over the analyzed motion. |
